Report: Chevy Volt production to hit 5,000 units a month by January
General Motors is trailing Nissan in plug-in vehicle sales. For now. GM plans to crank up production volume of its Chevrolet Volt to 5,000 a month by January 2012, and the company might have a shot at regaining its spot atop the plug-in leaderboard. That’s the opinion of Tony Posawatz, vehicle line director for the Volt, who told Bloomberg that:
It’s fair to say GM underestimated demand for the Volt. By January, the capacity we need will be online.
At today’s production levels, the Volt and the Leaf are in extremely short supply, but with both Nissan and GM racing to ramp up output, shortages could soon be a non-issue. Rebecca Lindland, a research analyst at IHS Automotive, says:
This is very much about supply constraints as opposed to a sales race. Next year will really show true demand for these kinds of cars and which one wins.
So, if sales of neither the Leaf nor the Volt are restricted by supply in 2012, which vehicle will do you suppose will be crowned the plug-in champ?
