GM made a bevy of announcements at the Center for Automotive Research’s Management Briefing Seminars on Thursday, including the confirmation of two brand new Cadillacs. The XTS large luxury sedan isn’t unexpected from a brand that has basically defined the category; however, the RWD ATS compact luxury sedan has our interest. Billed as a “driver’s car” the ATS will likely be the most affordable and fuel-efficient vehicle in Cadillac’s lineup.
Also announced was official pricing for the 2012 Buick Regal eAssist option, which we encountered recently at 2011 NY Auto Show. The “light electrification” fuel saving system can be yours for a cool $2000. Worth 2 stacks? That all depends on the price of gas and the health of your relationship with Mother Nature. The biggest thing standing in the way of widespread EV adoption is range anxiety, or the fear that you’ll run out of juice while nowhere near a charging station or electrical outlet. Well, researchers at Utah State University have apparently solved that issue after having wirelessly transmitted 5 Kw of electricity over a short distance.
This may mean a future where in-road EV chargers could power your car as you drive along. Of course the expense and challenges of installing such chargers is another question. But, still a big step toward range liberation. [DESERET NEWS via AUTOBLOG GREEN]
