Volkswagen set to drop the Jetta Hybrid in 2017

Despite announcing a newfound focus on electric vehicles, Volkswagen is set to kill the Jetta Hybrid in 2017. After dropping the Touareg Hybrid, the Jetta Hybrid was left as the company’s only hybrid offering in the United States. It’s disappointing news, as we praised the car for being one of the best driving hybrids available.

The Jetta Hybrid was never a sales leader, falling short of Volkswagen’s sales goals. Until recently the car had to compete in-house against Volkswagen’s diesel offerings. The diesels offered similar fuel economy numbers on paper and were often less expensive. The Jetta Hybrid, rated at 42 city/48 highway mpg, is only available in the top-level SEL trim, with an MSRP of $31,120. For comparison, the top-level Toyota Prius starts at $30,000 even and achieves far better fuel economy.

The sedan is – was – powered by a 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine that’s mated to a seven-speed DCT. The car felt a little more lively than other hybrids, partially since the hybrid system only added about 220 pounds over a similarly equipped non-hybrid Jetta.

We’ve added the pertinent segment of VW’s press release mentioning the cancellation below.
