Mercedes GLE-Class SUV spotted testing
Like any redesign, Mercedes will alter the GLE’s body to better fit in with its family of vehicles – but the current car’s fascia already does a good job of that. The grille and headlights will more or less maintain their current shape, with some small tweaks and updates. More dramatic changes will happen at the tail – expect the new GLE-Class to adopt a slimmer taillight profile and style, similar to the GLC-Class, C-Class Coupe, and S-Class Coupe. The camouflage makes it difficult to spot, but it looks like Mercedes will might soften he character lines on the GLE’s side, too. That would fit with MB’s latest design language.
More dramatic changes are under this GLE mule’s skin. The new CUV will lose some weight, but we don’t have intel on specific changes – our spies claim the overall goal of the weight savings is a reduction in CO2 output and an increase in fuel economy. Like the current GLE, Mercedes will offer gas, diesel, and plug-in powerplants, along with a range-topping AMG model.
The new GLE-Class will likely debut in 2018. Based on the state of this prototype – a production body under soft camouflage – we’d bet it’d show up in either Detroit or Geneva.
