Spy photos: Mercedes-Benz CLS in light camouflage

While the car world’s attention is focused on the glamour of Geneva, Mercedes-Benz is testing its swoopy new CLS in Sweden. Photographed at a service station in Norrland, Sweden, the CLS has now dropped all of its heavy camo, showing its flanks covered only in light foil. A possibility is also that the CLS will be called CLE in its new iteration, thanks to the updated Mercedes-Benz naming strategy.

What we can deduct from these photos is that the new-shape Mercedes-Benz grille has made its way onto the CLS, with the bottom opening grown wider – possibly inspired by AMG GT models such as the Panamericana. But the shooting brake version has sold so slowly in its current guise that it will not be included in the upcoming generation. Farewell to the longroof version, it seems.

As the CLS slots between the E-Class and the S-Class, it’s based on the same platform as the new E-Class, and the engine portfolio will most likely reflect that, even regarding the hotter versions. It is also likely that there will be a plug-in hybrid version of the CLS. And as for the interior, it’s an amalgam of E-Class saloon and coupe – and in this case features green ambient lighting, one of 64 available colors.
