Report: GM zeros in on Volt’s release in China; targeting July 2011
Early last month, General Motors delivered two drivable Volts to China. The vehicles arrived just in time to shuttle VIP guests to Shanghai’s Expo Park at the World Expo 2010. Before these Volts arrived, China’s access to the car was limited to gazing upon a few non-drivable concepts – now, China is readying for a launch like no other.
It’s coming soon. General Motors is expected to introduce the Volt to the Chinese market during the second half of 2011, reportedly starting in July. Initial volumes won’t be large, but this breakthrough vehicle has a higher meaning in China. The Volt will likely boost GM’s green cred and potentially set up lots of sales of efficient vehicles throughout China in the years ahead.
Analysts suggest that the Chinese market is flooded with first-time car buyers, many of whom don’t exactly strive for the greenest vehicles in the land. In time, though, these drivers may seek more fuel efficient, cleaner autos and the Volt sets up a link in to these buyers’ minds that fuel efficiency can come from The General. Will it work? We’ll have a better idea once The General releases detailed pricing and sales plans.
