Purolator adds 200 hybrids to its already large Canadian fleet

Recently, Purolator decided to add 200 more hybrid vehicles (HEVs) to its Canadian fleet. This purchase will effectively double the company’s total number of HEVs and further cement its position as the largest logistics company gas-electric vehicle fleet in all of North America.

Of the 200 additional HEVs purchased, 43 will join the Halifax and Dartmouth fleet, 60 HEVs will head off for Guelph, 19 will truck on over to Niagara and 79 will motor around the Greater Toronto Area. Purolator’s fleet that operates in and around the city of Halifax consists entirely of hybrid vehicles.

Purchasing and operating HEVs is not the only green thing that Purolator has done. The company also implemented a number of eco-conscious initiatives such as enforcing a strict no-idling policy for its fleet drivers and using route optimization software to reduce driving distances, emissions and fuel consumption. If you’re going to go to the trouble of buying all these hybrids, might as well maximize their effect, right?

Canada’s largest logistics company continues to lead the industry towards green alternatives

Dartmouth, NS, December 2, 2010 – Tom Schmitt, President and CEO of Purolator today announced the addition of 200 hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) to its fleet throughout the country – nearly doubling the company’s hybrid electric vehicle fleet, which is the largest fleet of hybrid electric vehicles for a logistics company in North America.

“As our company turns 50, Purolator is proud to continue to lead the industry towards green alternatives,” said Tom Schmitt, President and CEO of Purolator. “In 2005, Purolator was the first logistics company in Canada to introduce hybrid electric vehicles. Today, we have the largest fleet in North America.”

Since 2005, the replacement of conventional curbside delivery vehicles by hybrid electric vehicles has allowed Purolator to position itself at the forefront of environmental sustainability in Canada, with reductions of more than 2,100 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions and 645,000 litres of fuel.

“The addition of 200 hybrid electric vehicles is the next step to fulfilling our commitment to protect and preserve the environment we all live in,” added Mr. Schmitt.

Among the many Purolator locations receiving new hybrid electric vehicles, 43 will be added to the Halifax and Dartmouth fleet, making Purolator’s fleet operating in the City of Halifax 100 per cent hybrid electric. An additional 60 HEVs will be added in Guelph, while 19 will be added in Niagara, and finally, 79 in the Greater Toronto Area.
