Hyundai has announced that its 2011 Sonata Hybrid will be eligible for a full $1,300 tax credit. The electrified mid-size sedan officially goes on sale later this year, and the company says that the first 60,000 buyers will be able to walk away with the juicy credit in their pockets. There is a hitch, though: the program for federal tax credits on hybrid vehicles wraps up on December 31, 2010. All signs point to sales of the Sonata Hybrid kicking off in December, leaving buyers just one very short, expense-laden month to pounce on the tax credit.
Even so, the Sonata Hybrid remains one of only a handful of mid-size hybrid sedans still eligible for the credit. Competitors like the Ford Fusion Hybrid, Toyota Camry Hybrid and Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid have all either burnt up their tax credits or are no longer for sale. If you’re looking for 36 miles per gallon city and 40 mpg highway plus a little buying assistance from the government, it might be time to get to know your local Hyundai dealer.
