Daimler, DOE, Maryland deploy 143 heavy-duty Freightliner hybrid trucks
Daimler Trucks North America, along with the U.S, Department of Energy (DOE) and the Maryland Energy Administration (MEA), will deploy 143 heavy-duty Freightliner hybrid vehicles under the Maryland Hybrid Truck Initiative (MHTI). MHTI will utilize a $5.9-million grant received through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to offset the cost of deploying the heavy-duty hybrid trucks.
MHTI is a public-private partnership led by the DOE and its Clean Cities program. Five fleet partners – including Aramark, UPS, Nestle Waters of North America, Sysco Corporation, and Efficiency Enterprises – currently participate in Maryland’s hybrid truck initiative. These five companies will soon become the recipients of the 143 Freightliner hybrid trucks. The heavy-duty cargo-hauling hybrids will be deployed within the state of Maryland and, aside from transporting goods, will be used to train mechanics in hybrid vehicle repair and to study the actual fuel consumption of hybrids used in day-to-day operations.
