A small part of us died when Cadillac cancelled its Volt-based Converj production program just ahead of the company’s bankruptcy 2 years ago. The Converj concept was unveiled at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit and promised a smaller, sleeker and (most importantly) electrified Cadillac for the next generation of luxury car buyers.
It wasn’t just the car’s good looks that had us excited. The Converj represented GM’s commitment to applying the Voltec drivetrain across their vehicle lineup. The revolutionary Chevy Volt was just the beginning, or so it seemed.
Thankfully, GM’s resurgence has led them to reconsider bringing a plug-in Cadillac to market, as the carmaker confirmed a production version of the Converj earlier this week. Now called the ELR, the car’s propulsion system will be based on the Volt’s extended-range electric drivetrain. Happy days are here again. [AUTOBLOG]
The announcement of the ELR coupe wasn’t all that Cadillac had in store for the automotive world this week. They also debuted the droptop Ciel concept in Monterey, CA, leading up to this weekend’s Concours d’Elegance classic car show. Powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter V6 engine with hybrid assist technology the Ciel concept can produce 425 hp. Whenever a concept brings together li-ion batteries and turbochargers, you can bet it has the attention of the TRANSLOGIC faithful. [AUTOBLOG]
After various production and testing delays, Boeing has finally completed the FAA certification of its 787 Dreamliner. The plane is notable for its use of lightweight composite materials and advanced turbofan engines that make it Boeing’s most fuel-efficient commercial airplane yet. The airliner has designed an all-new interior to match, featuring LED mood lighting and auto-dimming “smart” glass. [AUTOPIA]
