James Brazell spent 40 years of his life working for Texaco before retiring as the coordinator of the oil company’s worldwide exploration and production activities. Now, the 84-year-old, Asheville, NC resident drives a Crystal Red 2011 Chevrolet Volt.

Back in 2008, some two-plus years before the Volt’s launch, Brazell placed a deposit for Chevy’s plug-in vehicle. When he later learned that the Washington D.C. area would be one of the initial launch markets, Brazell decided to purchase a Volt from Lindsay Chevrolet in Woodbridge, VA.

What motivated Brazell to purchase a Volt? Well, aside from feeling compelled to reduce his dependence on oil (slighty ironic, no?), the 84-year-old retiree seemed most intrigued by the Volt’s range, stating:

About 90 percent of my driving is less than 40 miles a day, so I expect to use very little gas. But the extended range of the gas engine is there if I want to take a drive to New York to visit my grandchildren.

After a 500-mile trip from the Virginia dealership to his home in Asheville, Brazell remarked:

The Volt is fabulous, and absolutely exceeds my expectations. I was especially impressed with the transition from electric to extended range. It was completely seamless. We were watching for it, but got to talking and completely missed the changeover.
