Toyota sells 1 millionth Prius in Japan
Cumulative sales in Japan of Toyota’s Prius hybrid topped the one-million mark last month, the Japanese automaker announced on Monday. Domestically, sales of the Prius hit 1.02 million units as of the end of August.
Toyota launched the eco-friendly Prius hatchback in December 1997 in Japan and exported it to the U.S. and a slew of other countries beginning in 2000. The second-generation Prius debuted in 2003 and Toyota launched the third-gen in 2009. As of August 31, cumulative worldwide sales of the Prius totaled 2.36 million units, and the hybrid hatch in now sold in 70 countries and territories. For the record, Toyota sold its one millionth Prius in the States back in April 2011.
