Back in April 2010, the Renault-Nissan Alliance and Daimler AG officially announced that the trio of automakers would collaborate on future vehicles and that each would take a 3.1-percent stake in the other company. The deal had been rumored for months as Daimler has long been seeking a partner.
Now comes word that the Renault-Nissan Alliance and Daimler are in talks to extend the scope of their partnership. Reuters reports that Daimler is trying to ink out a deal that would see Renault-Nissan enter into the German automaker’s Li-Tec battery joint venture with Evonik. The two automakers are supposedly discussing technical needs and will consult with Evonik soon.
Of course, if this tie-up becomes official, then Daimler’s brands (Mercedes-Benz, Smart) and even its electric vehicle partner Tesla sort of enter the mix too, meaning that this could be an epic deal. Earlier this year, talks between Nissan and Smart about jointly building a four-door Smart model were cancelled.
