Report: Obama administration buying 101 Chevy Volts, 10 Nissan Leafs

Later today, the Obama administration is expected to announce that it will purchase 116 plug-in vehicles and will install charging stations in government buildings in five cities.

The General Services Administration (GSA), which oversees two-thirds of the 600,000-plus vehicles in the U.S. government’s fleet – plans to buy 116 plug-in vehicles, including 101 Chevrolet Volts, ten Nissan Leafs and five Think City electric vehicles. Looks like our guess wasn’t too far off.

Once delivered, the vehicles will be put into service in five U.S. cities – Detroit, Washington, D.C., San Diego, San Francisco and Los Angeles. However, due to modest production levels, the GSA does not expect to take possession of the Volts until sometime in 2012. At this time, it’s not known when the government will take delivery of the battery-powered Leafs or Think Cities.

According to the Detroit News, the plug-in vehicle purchase will be officially announced later today by U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu.
