Report: GM will add second shift to Volt production line later this year
General Motor recently told us that production of the Chevy Volt will gradually increase each month of this year, and a new report from the Detroit Free Press states that this process will require a second shift at GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck plant. GM will add about 900 to 1,000 jobs there “late this year” to get started on training, the Freep says, with production really ramping up early next year. Plant manager Teri Quigley told the Free Press that this timeline is flexible because GM may change the Volt’s production rates, especially with gas prices climbing. Laid-off U.S. workers will get first crack at the new Volt production jobs.
We still don’t know how many Volts GM will make this year, but it should be somewhere between 10,000 and 25,000. There is an even bigger range for next year’s numbers, somewhere between 45,00 and 120,000.
