Quantum details its 35-mile electric range plug-in hybrid Ford F-150

Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies announced that it has developed a plug-in hybrid version of America’s best-selling vehicle, the Ford F-150. Quantum says that its plug-in F-150 was specifically designed for the demanding fleet use and claims that the truck will be capable of matching the performance of a conventional F-150, while offering substantially improved fuel economy and emitting less CO2.

The PHEV F-150 utilizes Quantum’s “F-Drive” hybrid system and boasts a 35-mile electric-only range before shifting over to hybrid mode. The F-Drive setup is compatible with both two- and four-wheel drive trucks. Additionally, Quantum says that the hybrid’s components don’t impinge upon the truck’s cab or bed and asserts that ground clearance is unchanged – all features that serious truck users will appreciate. Alan Niedzwiecki, chief executive officer of Quantum Technologies, claims that the plug-in F-150 “fills an important niche for fleet customers desiring a largely electric pick-up truck with extended-range capability.” Hat tip to Roy!

IRVINE, Calif., May 6, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide, Inc. (Nasdaq: QTWW) announced today that it has launched a new line of hybrid vehicles. Quantum has developed a new Plug-in Hybrid Version of the highest volume selling vehicle in America, the Ford F150 Pickup Truck, and will be providing them directly to fleet customers.

Quantum’s plug-in hybrid version of the F150 was specifically designed for the demanding use of America’s largest fleet operators. The vehicle will be capable of matching the performance of the conventional F150 vehicle while achieving substantially higher fuel economy and producing lower emissions. The PHEV F150 uses Quantum’s new “F-Drive” hybrid system which will have a 35 mile electric range before shifting to a hybrid mode where it can continue for a total range of over 400 miles. The Quantum “F-Drive” hybrid system is available in 2WD and 4WD versions. To meet the requirements of fleet customers, the F-Drive has been integrated in the F150 vehicle such that there is no impingement into the cab or bed and it maintains full ground clearance.
