It has taken more than a decade, but sales of hybrid vehicles in the U.S. have finally eclipsed two million units, according to Ward’s Auto.

The Honda Insight, which made its U.S. debut way back in 1999, was the first hybrid to hit showrooms in the U.S. Then, in 2000, the Toyota Prius burst onto the scene. Through the end of May 2011, cumulative sales of the Prius in the U.S. had exceeded 1,018,000. Meanwhile, U.S. sales of the Insight hit 65,566 units.

Unsurprisingly, the Prius is the best-selling hybrid vehicle in the U.S., but do you know which model is No. 2? It’s the Honda Civic Hybrid, and third, fourth and fifth place go to the Toyota Camry Hybrid, the Toyota Highlander Hybrid and the Lexus RX Hybrid, respectively. Looking for more details? Check out the hybrid vehicle sales breakdown posted over at Ward’s Auto.
