In its first-ever crash test evaluation of plug-in vehicles, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) concluded that the 2011 Chevrolet Volt earned the top rating of “good” for its front, side, rear, and rollover crash protection. Knowing that the Volt earned “good” can be a relief if it is ever involved in an accident that crumples its hood and deploys the airbags. That’s exactly what happened to Cars.com’s Chevy Volt.

Luckily, the Cars.com driver was only bruised in the incident. However, the Volt suffered some significant damage. Cars.com says that the preliminary estimate for repairing the damaged Volt was $10,500. This includes replacement of the vehicle’s hood, bumper, grille, headlight, radiator, two airbags, various heat exchangers and a seatbelt pretensioner. Adding insult to injury, the disabled Volt was nudged off the road by a police cruiser, resulting in damage to its rear bumper.

Cars.com says that it will track the Volt’s repairs and post an update when the plug-in Chevy returns to action. Any guesses when that’ll be?
