Details are starting to emerge on the 2014 Audi A4. According to reports, the A4 will ride on Audi’s lightweight MLB Evo platform, enabling the vehicle to weigh 300 pounds less than the current A4. Despite the reduced mass, the next-gen A4 is expected to grow in size to battle the enlarged BMW 3 Series.
Engine options are still unknown, but we’d expect to see the oil-burning TDI continue to be offered and some gasoline engines will surely be available. To improve fuel efficiency, several of the A4 variants will reportedly be equipped with stop-start technology.
If that’s not eco-friendly enough, the 2014 A4 is rumored to be offered in plug-in hybrid form, with an electric motor powering the rear axle and a fossil fuel-burning engine spinning the front wheels. Word is the plug-in A4 will be able to travel up to 37 miles on electricity alone. Additionally, this setup will be a through-the-road all-wheel-drive hybrid system dubbed e-Quattro. Sound good?
