Parody commerial wants Chevy Volt to be Obama’s running mate

For the last time, the Chevrolet Volt is not President Obama’s car.

The Volt isn’t his fault, his responsibility or even his idea. To make this abundantly clear: General Motors unveiled the car at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show. For those keeping track, that’s more than two years before Obama took office.

But, five years later, Obama is routinely associated with the Volt, especially by right-wingers who apparently hate the car. It’s true that Obama has been a strong promoter of plug-in vehicles in general, but all these attacks are making conservatives like Bob Lutz mad. Unfortunately, anger and reason are not stopping new attacks from coming. The latest comes in the form of a new parody commercial and website that suggests the plug-in hybrid replace Joe Biden as Obama’s running mate in the upcoming election. In truth, the website is nothing more than a front, a way to funnel people to another page that tries to tell Americans how much the auto industry bailout will cost.

The short video (available after the jump) steals its images liberally from actual Chevy Volt commercials, so perhaps it’ll be taken down in due course. Still, the overall anti-Volt message is getting out. A quick look at the comments on the YouTube video show that the claims from the debunked Volt chain email are being promoted there. Thus, the lies keep spreading. So, for the last time: the Chevrolet Volt is not President Obama’s car.

Oh, who are we kidding? This won’t be the last time we talk about this. Not by a long shot.
