McLaren P1 on throttle at the ‘Ring is drugs for your ears

We’ve heard engine noise from the McLaren P1 before, most recently from its run up the hill at Goodwood, and when McLaren F1 driver Sergio Perez lapped the Top Gear test track. But those sound clips have been from inside the cabin, and while plenty throaty, rather sedate.

Not this time. Although it’s only 25 seconds long, someone managed to get next to the tarmac at the Nürburgring while the P1 was practicing a strafing run. A 3.8-liter V8, two turbos and an electric motor can fire 903 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque from behind the driver’s cabin, and it sounds like almost all of it is being employed. Ladies and gentlemen, a brand new sound has entered the world of supercars.
