California poised to issue more green carpool stickers

Future plug-in hybrid buyers in California can tentatively rejoice because it appears more stickers for driving in the state’s carpool lanes will be issued as part of the Green Clean Air Vehicle decal program. Pending legislation would yet again increase the number of stickers available to keep the incentive rolling past the current limit of 70,000 vehicles.

This new statute would increase the number of stickers by an additional 15,000 to take the total up to 85,000. Gov. Jerry Brown has until July 1 to sign the bill into law, and he’s expected to do so, according to Hybrid Cars.

Before this bill, there was serious concern that the state could have run out of the green decals. According to the California Air Resources Board, the state had issued 68,343 of them out of the 70,000-unit total, as of June 8. The state government originally set the limit at 40,000 stickers, but thanks to high popularity, there have been several expansions since then.

The green stickers allow a single person to drive a PHEV in California’s carpool lanes. In addition, the state has an unlimited number of white decals available for fully zero-emissions models like battery electric vehicles or hydrogen fuel cells.
