Borgward PHEV coming to Frankfurt

There automotive mystery of just what the recently revived Borgward brand is up to will be solved at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. After staging a high-profile return at this year’s Geneva Motor Show with a beautiful Isabella on display, the old German brand promises to reveal its new crossover in just a few days. Beyond a few teaser photos, the company isn’t revealing much, but according to Green Car Reports, the CUV could be a plug-in hybrid.

Borgward’s return is years in the making and is being led by Christian Borgward, the founder’s grandson. While the name carries some vintage prestige, China’s Beiqi Foton is working in close cooperation with the relaunch, and the new model is expected to be built there. In addition to the PHEV, non-electrified versions with two- and four-wheel drive are also expected.

Before getting too excited about seeing the German brand’s first new vehicle in 55 years, realize that the Borgward CUV is unlikely to reach the US. Instead, the company is reportedly taking a similar strategy as Lotus by keeping its new model initially exclusive to the Chinese market. Success there would allow for growth elsewhere and possibly the launch of additional vehicles. The automaker’s teaser doesn’t provide a peek at the CUV, but the clip does suggest an aggressive exhaust note.
