Volvo XC40 crossover gets accidental reveal in Instagram photo

In May we showed you first-look photos of the interior of the Volvo XC40, the company’s long-awaited (and stalled) entry into the compact crossover utility vehicle segment. Now a leaked Instagram photo gives us a further tease of the vehicle.

The photo features the rear end highlighted in stark relief from the dark background, an effect known in the art world as chiaroscuro. It was captured by Instagram user volvo.lov after an apparent accidental leak from Volvo Germany.

@mkilz managed to catch this picture of the supposed new XC40 on the German Volvo Cars website. Looks like a mistake of Volvo Cars since the picture was removed quickly after. It shows similarities with the Concept 40.1, including the narrow, hockey stick-shaped LED brake lights and integrated exhaust outlets in the bumper.

The XC40 is to be built on Volvo’s small-car Compact Modular Architecture, which the crossover will share with the upcoming Volvo S40 sedan, V40 hatchback and Geely Lynk & Co 01 Crossover. The CMA platform is a shared development between the Swedish brand and Geely, its Chinese parent company.

The XC40 will be available with a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine when it goes on sale, likely in 2018. The CUV is part of the company’s plans to completely overhaul its vehicle lineup by 2019.

An optional front-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid version featuring a 55-kilowatt electric motor is expected to go on sale next year as part of the automaker’s plans to sell 1 million hybrids and plug-in vehicle by 2025 while phasing out diesel powertrains.
