There will be a way to buy a 2019 Volvo S60 Polestar Engineered

Most everything about the introduction of the 2019 Volvo S60 and V60 was pretty normal, with the exception of the S60 Polestar Engineered. The tuned-up version of the plug-in luxury sedan was going to be extremely limited in availability with just 20 for the United States. Even stranger than the extraordinarily low volume was the fact that you couldn’t actually buy it — you had to use the Care by Volvo subscription service. As it turns out, though, there will be a way to own one of these cars, and it appears that more will be produced.

We asked someone from Volvo why the company opted for the low volume and subscription model for the car, and it boiled down to the fact that Volvo is still ramping up production, and just won’t have many of the Polestar Engineered early on. The company also wanted to draw some attention to the subscription program using the special model. We asked what would happen with the cars after people were done subscribing, since users of Care by Volvo will only get new cars, not ones previously used by someone else. The answer is once the cars exit subscription, they’ll be available for the dealer to resell as used cars, or, if for some reason a dealer didn’t want it, it would be sent to auction for any dealer. So in a few years, some of these early Polestar Engineered models will probably enter the used car market.

Now, since there are only 20, it might be tricky to nab one of the first-year models, but the same Volvo person said that the company plans to start offering more in upcoming model years. They don’t have production numbers yet, but there should be more than the first year, and with the greater volume, will come additional ownership models, meaning you’ll likely be able to buy one new sometime in the future. Naturally there isn’t a price estimate for the future, but it’s safe to assume it will command a substantial premium, as the first 20 did in the subscription service.
