Nissan Leaf finally sees sales increase, but Chevy Volt still crushing it
Every month, I think that posting the never-ending sales competition between the forefathers of the modern plug-in car era is making less and less sense. We have so many green car choices nowadays that just looking at these two vehicles doesn’t make as much sense. Still, it’s a record we can look at that goes back almost six years now, and the ups and downs between the all-electric Nissan Leaf and the Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid have certainly illustrated some important trends in the shopping public over the years, so when the monthly sales figures come out, I always want to check in and see how our old friends are doing. And, as you might suspect, the Volt continues to do well.
Chevy sold 2,031 Volts last month, up 114 percent over the 949 sold in September 2015 and part of a 76 percent year-over-year increase (from 9,264 up to 16,326). The Leaf, finally, after many months of downward trending numbers, saw an uptick to 1,316 sales. That’s up 5.5 percent from the 1,247 sold last September, but it’s not enough to help stem the sinking tide. So far in 2016, Leaf sales are down 32 percent (from 13,630 for the first nine months last year to 9,238 this year).
So, that’s the story with the vanguard. We’ll have a complete look at monthly green car sales for you in a little while.
