2018 Volvo V90 revealed: long live the wagon

Is there anything more Swedish than a Volvo wagon? That’s rhetorical, and we mean it in a good way. The new V90 is almost too pretty. Seriously. Just look at the way the stretched roof is in perfect proportion to the elongated hood. We’re admittedly smitten with Volvo’s latest designs, but this big wagon has left us speechless. We can’t even think of a joke about flat-pack furniture.

Volvo pushes the Sweden card pretty heavy in the reveal video seen below. We get it, Volvo. Your cars come from a land of beautiful design, and beautiful people doing interesting things with a thoughtful and cheery disposition. And we kind of wish we lived there.

The interior is a dead ringer for the S90, which is just fine by us. Volvo’s infotainment system, one of our favorites, dominates the center of the dashboard. Clean lines and tasteful wood accents carry the rest of the interior theme off in style. All of Volvo’s latest driving assistance systems will be available, like the semi-autonomous Piloted Drive feature.

As we mentioned in reports of earlier leaks, the V90 shares the Scalable Product Architecture platform with the S90 sedan and XC90 platform. The powertrains carry over as well, topped by T8 plug-in hybrid which uses a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder paired to an electric motor to make 410 horsepower (10 more than in the S90 and XC90). If the other large Volvos are anything to go by, expect at 250 hp T5 model and a 315 hp T6.

Again, using the S90 as yardstick, the V90 will be around 195 inches long with a 115-inch wheelbase. That slots right between the Mercedes-Benz E-class and S-class for those keeping score at home. The V90 is a little smaller than the full-size German luxury sedans, but it’s nicer to look at and just as smart. In other words, a true Swede.
